The best for me is to have the messages in the same directory as
the contest log (.wt4) because the content of each message might
be different from a contest to another one.<br>

2/ You can also save or load messages from anywhere (in the CW
or RTTY messages dialog) in textual format. The default
directory depends on the contest callsign you're using, the op
callsign, and the contestID. It's in this very same directory
that Phone messages are saved. But you can choose any other
directory if you want.
