Well, here is the problem, and I think this must be a bug.

I am unable to replicate this problem using WT 4.1.0 on a CQ 160 log. It seems to be working as documented. Please send specifics (full names of all files, type of contest). Text files must end in .SCP, binary files must end it .DTA.
I only had the N+1 window open and not the check partial. When the
latter is open the default.dta file IS used, but NOT in the N+1 window
where the contest specific file is maintained.

Are you selecting "Used files list" in the check partial pop-up menu to determine which file is being used by each window?
Are you checking "In log only" in the pop-up menu? You probably don't want to do that.

If I put a DEFAULT.SCP file (text file) or DEFAULT.DTA file (binary) in the {AppData}\databases directory, then WT always uses that DEFAULT file for both Check Partial and N+1 windows, regardless of which one is open. If I remove those DEFAULT files and restart WT (or use the text command REOPENNOW), WT uses CQWW_160.SCP for both Windows.

The help file says
specifically:

<<it will be used as default file for
partial and N+1 checks instead of contest-specific default file.>>

note BOTH files are quoted. I checked this in all the contests I have
used with WT, and since this is quite a small number, also checked a
couple of new contests, and the result is always the same. I cannot
believe that this is a function of the default.dta file structure itself
if it works in the N+1 window, but if you need a copy I can send it to
you. I know that several other people are also using the same file which
is the same one as is used in N1MM.

I just downloaded MASTER.SCP and MASTER.DTA from http://www.supercheckpartial.com/ to {AppData}\databases, saving them as DEFAULT.SCP and DEFAULT.DTA, respectively.

The problem is not urgent as I can live with having both partial and N+1
windows open.

Maybe I don't understand what you're trying to do. I keep both windows open all the time. One let's me know that I've got a full and known callsign, and the other that I've probably copied one letter wrong somewhere. The colors tell me whether we've worked before, so I never check "In log only."
